Upper Street’s Tastiest Family Trattoria, Terra Rossa
Craving a cosy evening at a charming local Italian, plucked straight from a Richard Curtis movie? Drag Terra Rossa to the top of that ever-growing list of restaurants lingering in your phone’s notepad.
Here we found warm, candlelit corners, a family of genuinely lovely staff and a carb-heavy menu that made us feel totally fine with the fact London sees about 30 days of real summer each year. Bring on the April showers, for all we want to do is hole up with a bottle of red and cheese-laden dishes in this Angel neighbourhood gem.
Championing the finest quality cured meats and sausage, plus handmade pasta and wood-fired pizza dough, this beautiful space pulls together the best elements of Puglia. We took pride in loosening our belt buckles before ordering Aubergine Parmigiana to start (floured and fried aubergines layered with tomato sauce and mozzarella and baked in the oven).
We’d spotted this dish on Instagram prior to our visit and couldn’t resist. As good, if not better than the pictures, an ooey-gooey pot of comfort food soon arrived – the perfect choice for anyone in need of cheering up.
Next, we pored over the extensive pizza menu (The ‘Terra Rossa’ comprises tomato, mozzarella, bresaola cured meat, sausage, grana cheese & rocket while the ‘Capricciosa’ combines mozzarella, tomato sauce, cotto ham, mushrooms, artichokes & black olives).
Eventually, pasta won out – an emphatic recommendation from our waiter led to two helpings of the excellent Octopus Ragu, a super-rich tomato sauce layered over minced octopus and al dente rigatoni. With a hefty serving of bruschetta on the side, there was truly little room left for dessert.
(But if you can manage it, we’d recommend the Lemon Sorbetto. And the Chocolate Souffle. This is a judgement-free zone, right?).
