Sampling The Set Lunch Menu At Hix Soho
WHAT? You remember Mark Hix, MBE and restaurateur. He’s a chef with remarkable talent and confidence, who shocked foodies almost a decade ago by opening several successful restaurants at the height of a recession – one of which housed a giant cow sliced in half, preserved in formaldehyde.
Nowadays he runs even more restaurants across the capital, including Hix Soho just along from The Ritz and Harrods. We popped in to sample the rather reasonably-priced, pre-theatre lunch menu, poking our heads in at infamous Mark’s Bar downstairs – a low-lit drinking den just perfect for whiling away a rainy afternoon.
NEED TO KNOW: Two courses are a tidy £19.50, three £23.95. For that you’ll choose between the likes of shellfish soup with Tarquin pastis or ‘Hix’ cure Salmonata with grilled flatbread, followed by the main course of juicy steak, Swainson House farm chicken escalope or perhaps Peterhead smoked haddock with colcannon and a poached Burford brown.
Meat is deftly cooked, oft served with piping hot, perfectly seasoned fries, and the flavours are wholesome and British. We loved our lunch here, sitting on studded leather banquettes amid curious artwork and luxurious dark oak flooring.
NEED TO KNOW: From January to November you can gorge yourself on Happy Hour oysters, served 4-7pm Monday to Friday at just £1 each. This place prides itself on top quality fish and shellfish, so an opportunity to indulge like this shouldn’t be missed.
