RedFarm Has Arrived In London

redfarm covent garden

WHAT? An achingly modern alternative to prissy dim sum joints, flying in red gingham, Pacman dumplings and pillowy custard bao fresh from New York. RedFarm squeezes in 96 covers across three floors, a penny’s throw from the street performers in Covent Garden’s piazza and next door to another success story hailing from across the pond, Balthazar.

WHY GO? The pastrami egg rolls alone are worth the trip, piping hot crispy shells giving way to tightly wrapped, salty pastrami and tangy pickle – this is the dream food of drunks, though you can get happily sloshed here, too.

Start your meal with a peppy SWB cocktail, muddling Finlandia Vodka, strawberries, watermelon, basil and cranberry, or a refreshingly tasty non-alcoholic refresher – our plus one opted for ginger syrup, blackberries and club soda. Must-order dishes include thrice-fried, gloriously sticky crispy beef, and supremely tender Szechuan cumin lamb skewers, deftly spiced and served medium rare.

It’s not often you’ll spot cheese on a predominantly Asian menu, so the cheeseburger spring rolls spark much intrigue. We were more tempted, though, by the restaurant’s signature dish evoking a Pac Man game – a deep-fried shard of sweet potato ‘eating’ a line up of pastel-coloured dumplings stuffed with shrimp. A gimmick, certainly. Delicious, indeed.

From the plentiful Specials board, we couldn’t help but order the devilishly moreish garlic rice with shrimp, though wolfing this down with wild abandon meant no room saved for shrimp-stuffed crispy chicken or Dingley Dell pork chop. Many, many items were deferred to the ‘next time’ wish list, not least pork and crab soup dumplings and mussels with Thai basil and lemongrass.

Shovelling down a burning hot, creamy custard bao each for dessert, we agreed that the biggest issue here is holding back on ordering literally everything, save actually rupturing your stomach. You dim sum, you lose some (sorry).
