Authentic Turkish Food At Gokyuzu, Harringay
WHAT? A family-owned, super authentic and much-loved Turkish restaurant in North London, turning tables at high speed as hungover locals craving super satisfying salt and stodge line up in the neighbouring takeaway shop.
Gökyüzü boasts almost 20 years’ experience of recreating mouth-watering dishes, first tasted in the owner’s grandparents’ kitchen in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. Borrowing from traditional recipes, dishes are piled ludicrously high with meats, freshly-caught seafood and a big selection of Turkish pizzas (pide) topped with unctuous cheeses. Inviting kebab shop smells draw meat lovers from afar, though there are a surprising amount of great veggie options, too.
WHERE? Gökyüzü means ‘sky’ in Turkish, nodding to the fact the organisation (with more branches in Chingford, Walthamstow and Finchley) aims for the best in everything they do. Surrounded by similar competitors jostling for attention on Green Lanes, home to a huge Turkish and Kurdish contingent, quality has to stay high to ensure survival. Happily, everything we tried on the two occasions we’ve visited was excellent.
All meals start with a complimentary bowl of salad greens, soft breads and yoghurt, while guests peruse the gargantuan menu of grilled meats and meze. We love the Babaganoush (grilled aubergines, garlic, tahini, yoghurt) and Humus Kavurman (gluten-free, too!), topped with sumptuous lamb cutlets and pine nuts.
WHY GO? Nothing beats the buzz of watching a huge platter piled with chop-smackingly tasty meats being plonked down in front of a hungry crowd. We’d highly recommend the Mixed Platter, with more than enough lamb shish, chicken shish, adana kebab, ribs (2pcs) and chicken wings (2pcs) for two people (and coming in at just £22.50). Try the even larger version for a bigger crowd. Vegetarians will be more than pleased with the indulgent Vegetable Musakka, layering fried vegetables, green lentils, bechamel sauce, cheese and halep sauce (£13.50). There’s an extensive wine and beer menu, too.
Best of all? It’s almost guaranteed there’ll be plenty left over for lunch the next day, making it even better value for money (and vaguely healthy if you pair it with a salad). #Winning.
