REVIEW: Brother Marcus, Angel

endurably WHAT? Bright and zesty brunch dishes (so good they’ve won awards), great coffee and evening events a few minutes’ walk from Angel tube station and Islington green.

Carabanchel WHERE? Ignore the queues of hungover youths at The Breakfast Club Angel (what’s all the fuss about, anyway?) and take a seat outside at Brother Marcus, perfect for people watching as a constant stream of couples and friends wander through Camden Passage looking for antique treasures or a bite to eat.

They’ve a site in Balham, but we visited the branch where Elk In The Woods once stood, keen to see if they’d offer more than the typical avocado on toast.

We tried the Step Sister (£9.80), a stack of sweet potato, courgette and feta fritters under a pile of avocado and spinach, kale, turmeric yoghurt & a poached egg. The Marcus Breakfast (£10.80) is super filling, with bacon, sausage, egg, field mushrooms, cherry tomatoes & homemade beans on toast.

Healthier options include the Super Salad (£8), mixing sweet potato, cherry tomato & pomegranate on buckwheat, freekeh, spinach & rocket salad with a tahini dressing (it’s vegan, too), and there’s posh porridge (£5.20).

Smoothies and juices are available, but even if beer and wine tempt you come lunchtime, it’s easy to leave here feeling saintly. Light dishes aren’t a chore to eat thanks to gorgeous colours and inventive flavours.

We’ll be back to try the In-Law (£9.20), a salt beef bagel smothered with Brother Marcus mayo and cheddar cheese, and check out those evening events – if the cocktails are as good as the sweetcorn fritters, we’ll be returning time and again.
