REVIEW: Long White Cloud, Hoxton
WHAT? A compact yet light-filled Kiwi cafe and gallery space between Hoxton and Shoreditch, counters groaning with free-range, fair trade & freshly made pastries, rainbow salads and baked goods.
The graffiti-ed exterior and sparse decor do nothing to show off the excellent food and drinks served here, so don’t be put off by the primary school-like tables and chairs – service comes with a warm smile, the menu itself is delightful and the coffee’s hot and strong.
WHERE? A few moments from the delights of Columbia Road, it’s conveniently placed just a few minutes walk from Shoreditch High Street, near some of the area’s quirkier offerings like Barn The Spoon and ever-reliable pub The Marksman.
WHY GO? For the veggie breakfast (topped with a sneaky sausage and obligatory avocado, in our case).
Think halloumi, a fried egg, courgette, mushrooms, red pepper and tomato on sourdough, drizzled in salsa verde. Elsewhere on the menu is a Full English fry up, lasagne, pies. various quiches, frittatas and pasta bakes, plus a litany of sharp and soul-nourishing smoothies.
ANYTHING ELSE? Shelving towards the back of the cafe doubles as a mini shop, offering New Zealand favourites like Vegemite, Chocolate Fish, Squiggles and Tim Tams.
FUN FACT: The cafe’s name comes from the Maori name for their country: Aotearoa, AKA ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’.
