REVIEW: Summer With Monika, Hoxton
WHAT? As stylish as its namesake, the 1953 film directed by Ingmar Bergman, Summer With Monika brings together curious vinyl, health-boosting smoothies and delicious food with a distinctly Swedish slant.
WHERE? Sat alongside Fashionbite favourite Friends Of Ours on trendy Pitfield street, it’s moments from tech hub Old Street roundabout and buzzy Hoxton Square, not to mention Shoreditch high street a short stroll away.
Designed by Argentinian architect and artist Chino Soria, it’s a space that invites relaxed, friendly chatter – with outside seating next to a small patch of grass, you can perch in the sunshine with the dog come Spring. Start by perusing SWM’s menu of smoothies and juices, with the option to blend with dairy-free milks, nuts and superfood powders.
Next, we recommend smoked salmon, eggs and avocado (hugely generous helpings) on sourdough, a protein bowl of kale and smoked salmon, or matcha porridge with spirulina, cinnamon, banana and berries, topped with toasted almonds and honey.
The deli counter’s heaving with freshly baked brownies, cakes and Croque Monsieurs, but there are a variety of Swedish treats to take away for later. Make this the day you finally try organic blueberry cordial, lingonberry jam or Dill Chips with your Friday night hummus and wine.
You can drop in for more than just coffee, with the chance to hear music from around the atlas, (a mix of disco, ambient, electronic, compilations, soundtracks and bargain boxes) at listening stations next to the seating area. Trawl through the £1 record bin while you wait for your Bears Feast smoothie to be blended (our favourite, a delicious mix of peanut butter, banana, cacao, açai, honey and any milk your diet requires.
A spot full of smiles and sunshine, an hour in here never fails to cheer us up. If you’re really lucky, the owner will pop by with his gorgeous dog Louie, too…
