REVIEW: Zia Lucia, Holloway

WHAT? The Italian word ‘Zia’ denotes family, or more specifically, a beloved Auntie who can always make you feel at home. That’s the vibe this friendly neighbourhood pizzeria is shooting for, caring for your needs with 48-hour fermented doughs and four (four!) types of pizza base.

WHERE? A few minutes’ straight walk from Highbury & Islington overground, Zia Lucia Holloway is super easy to find – and a new branch has just opened in Brook Green (take advantage of the 50% soft launch prices 3-8th Feb).

WHY GO? Pizza lovers will delight in something a bit different, choosing from Vegetable Charcoal, Wholemeal, Gluten-Free and Traditional bases before toppings can even be considered.

We tried a perfect plate of Bruschetta with chopped tomato and fresh basil to start, followed by a pizza with a vegetable charcoal base (when in Rome, or in this case, Holloway Road), smothered with tomato, mozzarella, aubergines and Parmigiano. Feeling smug as we were schooled on charcoal’s excellent digestive properties, we could almost fool ourselves that this dish was healthy – though our ridiculously full stomachs said otherwise.

The genuinely health-conscious can opt for large salads (try the rocket, asparagus, tomatoes and Parmigiano) and a great vegan option is the Vegetable Tagliere (to share – a delightfully colourful medley of roasted peppers, aubergines, courgettes, asparagus, artichokes, butternut squash and carrots). It’s notable that you can switch up any pizza to buffalo mozzarella for £2.50, and the wine menu is short but selective.
