REVIEW: The Real Greek, Dulwich Village
Guest food writer Nathaniel Collins reports on the latest addition to South East London’s picturesque Dulwich Village.
The Real Greek, a restaurant specialising in eastern Mediterranean cuisine, has forayed into areas that high street restaurants seldom go, South East London. Local folk are sometimes wary of this combination. Those amongst us who remember Greenwich as a picturesque world heritage site, with independent food and retail outlets, have more than a sigh of regret as various regeneration projects given the centre a touch of… well, every other city centre.
Done well, however, and it can really brighten up the high street and serve as a reassuring sense of arrival to those who have recently invested in that area. Dulwich is no stranger to chain restaurants, having long hosted well known Italian pizza joints, and its healthy demographic of young families makes it an ideal location for The Real Greek to expand south of the river.
We arrived to a packed restaurant, with a healthy buzz of chatter. The decor sets a fresh, uplifting, and convivial ambience, with sky blue furniture set against white interior, intentionally replicating the national flag but also creating the sense of a costal Aegean village.
The food was generally a good quality standard, reflecting a wide range of Meze dishes for sharing, with a souvlaki-based lunch menu for those with less time on their hands. Notable dishes include the lamb cutlets and the grilled octopus, the latter going very well with the decent selection of white wines available. Of course, being a chain restaurant, they also feel compelled to tell you how many calories are in each dish, which left me reeling with the stunning revelation that the side plate of taramasalata I have routinely tucked into my whole life is laden with 982 of the buggers!!
TAKE THE FAMILY
Greek culture puts food at the heart of the family and this ethos has flowed through The Real Greek’s approach to diner experience. Having kids eat free will clearly play well with the plethora of families enjoying Dulwich’s many highlights over the weekend. Coupled with helpful staff and a family-friendly approach, they have struck a most vital cord for any restaurant outlets looking to prosper in this part of London.
