REVIEW: Peyotito, Notting Hill

REVIEW: Peyotito, Notting Hill

WHAT? One of Latin America’s most revered chefs delivers unique Mexican food in a beautiful West London setting – think high-quality (and high strength) tequila and mezcal cocktails, meaty tacos (gluten and dairy-free opions aplenty) and proper guacamole.

WHERE? Perched on Kensington Park Road in leafy Notting Hill.

WHY GO? Start things with zingy guacamole, scooped up with homemade tostadas.

The Tajín-rimmed margaritas are nothing short of excellent (have three) and we’re still thinking about our tacos de barbecoa – meltingly soft, 24-hour braised lamb with a dab of salsa tatemada.  A mole plate is essential (typically a thick sauce made with sweet and spicy chillies and bitter chocolate) and our choice (Mole De Olla) came with tender short rib, slow-cooked in traditional dried broth with seasonal vegetables – unctuous yet decadently satisfying.

For dessert, try the simple yet sweet Flan De Vanilla – a pleasantly gloopy Mexican-style baked custard.

As for the setting, it’s beautiful, modern and clean-cut – not a sombrero in sight, it’s perfect for a semi-casual date.

Beware, though – the West London location ensures matching price points (£12.50 a cocktail, though they’re damn good). Perhaps drop in for one or two, and have a casual wander around the bars and pubs in the area afterwards.
