REVIEW: Swingers Golf Club, Aldgate
WHY GO? For two super-stylish nine hole crazy golf courses, five cocktail bars, three of London’s best street-food vendors, a two-story clubhouse with a gin terrace, the friendliest staff this side of Shoreditch and nightly DJs pumping out funk and soul. Not much, then.
WHERE? Tucked away by the foot of the Gherkin, follow the sound of laughter and glasses clinking as golfers take a cigarette break outside the busy venue. Five minutes walk from Bank or Aldgate, slightly further from Liverpool Street station.
WHAT? One might assume this highly-stylised concept is a haven for city boys and their clients – and one would be right, given the location.
But it’s also completely, uninhibitedly awesome, welcoming anyone over the age of 18 to gladly make a fool of themselves.
After your third expertly-made cocktail, attempts to putt a lost ball out of a mound of sand into increasingly difficult holes make for some great banter, in the truest sense of the word.
Two 9-hole courses snake around the beautifully designed, colourful space filled with foliage and trendy wooden breeze blocks.
Neither experts or novices taking themselves too seriously as Michael Jackson and Prince blare from the stereo and waiters whizz past with shots of Cazcabel honey tequila (goes down far too smoothly – you’ve been warned) and Espresso Martinis, plus an ever-changing menu of seasonal cocktails. Right now you can try the Ryder Cup special and the ‘Grown Up Fanta’, to name a couple.
Try the cocktail of the month, currently an inventive Plum Daiquiri made with Yaguara cachaca, plum pureé, lemon juice and sugar that’s more than worth the impact it’ll have on your par.
Having worked up an appetite, hit one of three gourmet street food trucks peddling high-end kebabs (read our full review of Le Bab here), the best burgers in London (check out our thoughts on Patty + Bun) and pizza from the one and only Pizza Pilgrims.
HOW MUCH? Bloody good value at £13 per person per game, and you can rent out the whole space for office parties. Food will set you back about £10 a meal without sides, and cocktails hover around £11.
