REVIEW: DF Mexico, Tottenham Court Road
Any Wahaca fan will know good fast food when they see it – minimum fuss, maximum colour and flavour. So how about this spin-off: DF Mexico’s Tottenham Court Road branch, now open following a popular run at Brick Lane’s Truman Brewery.
Popping primary colours, lighting strung from the ceiling and mismatched art work come together in that hip, modern way most restaurants do nowadays – everything feels vibrant and young.
The food, though. The food. Tacos piled high with chicken and pork, huge burritos stuffed with rice, zingy green bowls of guacamole and a regularly-changing menu of special dishes – currently, the buttermilk chicken torta burger, filled with spicy mayo and purple cabbage.
We sampled the latter and can confirm the brioche bun to be buttery and soft, the chicken expertly fried and the Sol beer alongside it served cold.
Greedily sharing a steak DIY platter too, we can vouch for the bubbling skillet of melty cheese and medium-cooked steak, eaten any way you please with a pile of small tortilla wraps and sauces. The fish tacos are superb also, flaky fish peeking out from golden crispy coatings.
Thomasina Miers and Mark Selby’s trip around the border states of the US led them to creating this string of restaurants with a fun mix of flavour – Mexican spices, for sure, alongside meaty US offerings.
You can detect Miers’ playful side, too – jaunty juices like Hibiscus on tap, coke floats and frozen margaritas alongside good wine options. Dessert’s an event in itself – soft serve ice cream with plenty of toppings and chocolate brownies to boot. Plenty of fun, pre or post drinks – we’ll see you there come Friday.
