REVIEW: Film & Fizz, One Aldywych

REVIEW: Film & Fizz, One Aldywych

If you’re anything like us, you’ve a list of films you still need to see, about as long as your arm. So when we were asked to pop to the beautiful One Aldwych hotel in Covent Garden to watch one of the past year’s biggest movies in the comfort of their private screening room, we signed up in a second.

Every week, the hotel offers guests and visitors a different film to choose from, followed by a three-course dinner in their restaurant Indigo  with a chilled glass of Lallier Grande Réserve Champagne.

We chose The Big Short, following Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Christian Bale and Brad Pitt as four denizens in the world of high-finance, as they predict the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s.

The adaptation of Michael Lewis’ book was skilful and funny, every bit as good as friends and family had billed after seeing it when it came out. Film & Fizz offers a great opportunity to catch a brilliant film on a big screen, when you were too busy first time around.

Then, onto our three course set menu – we chose a squid starter, with pork belly and vegetables for mains and a sweet lemon posset to finish. All was served promptly with a gorgeous view of the hotel lobby below, scattered with towering artwork and foliage. A wonderful place to unwind on a Friday night, away from the crowds of central London.

The summer programme of films is something to shout about too – from Meryl Streep’s Florence Foster Jenkins (the story of the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer) to High Rise (an unnerving tale of life in a modern tower block running out of control, based on J.G Ballard’s novel) boasting Sienna Miller, Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Irons.

Ideal to take your mum on a London visit and the perfect date venue, Film & Fizz guarantees a luxurious evening for film buffs.
