REVIEW: KuPP, Paddington

REVIEW: KuPP, Paddington

The ethos behind KuPP, the canal side coffee shop cum breakfast spot cum drinking den, is clear the minute you walk in – simple Scandinavian excellence evident in its bright interiors, clean lines and the aroma of truly great coffee.

Its owner’s love affair with Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden began ten years ago, many trips spent picking up tricks to bring the perfect combination of flavour and style to the London outpost.

We arrived with the intention of sampling the bottomless brunch (£30 for a 90  minute sitting), the very word ‘smorgasboard’ too exciting to pass up.

Selecting the ‘Scandi’ Tom Collins, we settled into a comfy booth before getting up again to explore the store, stocking tea and coffee brewing equipment from the Japanese brand Hario. Whether you prefer espresso or filter blends, you can buy beans here – and if you don’t have a grinder at home, they’ll take of that for you too.image3(1)

First came the home-cured Norwegian gravadlax, with Atlantic prawn Skagen, house smoked trout and London-based Hansen & Lydersen smoked salmon, served perfectly chilled with fresh, crusty bread and sharp lemon.

Next, greedily, the special house smoked pork meatballs with potted rabbit (our first time sampling the meat, and not our last) and a golden, flaky chorizo sausage roll. Västerbotten cheese rounded off the meaty feast, delicous atop lightly toasted sourdough and fresh cherry tomatoes.

A huge slab of perfectly-cooked roast beef, crispy onion,  beetroot, creamy potatoes and lashings of lingonberry sauce completed our culinary journey, leaving us fit to burst with delicious tidbits from across Scandinavia.

Perfectly placed for a long canalside stroll, grab a (rather excellent) coffee on your way out the door. It’s the perfect fuel your next adventure, and be sure to wave to Paddington bear if you spot him on the way – share tales of the lingonberry jam with him and you might put him off marmalade forever.
