REVIEW: Enoteca Rabezzana, Farringdon

If you love great wine and small, intimate date venues, Enoteca Rabezzana deserves your attention. An artfully decorated space five minutes from Barbican and a stone’s throw from historic Smithfields market, it’s ideal for stopping off after a day’s exploring for a rewarding glass of wine. Or three. And a few tapas dishes. And probably a main.

So what of the grapes, then? Rabezanna Vini are wine producers in the Monferrato area of Italy, four generations of the same family using organic grapes and over 100 years of experience to pick the very best for your perusal. Their first UK restaurant venture stocks hundreds of reds and whites using the Coravin preservation system, where wine can be taken from the bottle without removing the cork – so no chance of spoiling your tipple.

We began with a glass of Langhe Arneis DOC, Voghera, followed by a huge bowl of steaming hot clams and mussels, the juices mopped up with squidgy rosemary doughballs. Next was a spicy chilli pasta, and a comforting bowl of creamy mash with beef .

Dessert was a creamy chocolate pudding, molten in the middle – and a selection of cheese kindly sent over by the waiter to enjoy with our sweet white Passito (Picolit DOCG).

On a rainy evening that calls for a slice of pleasantness personified, this is a charming little place to have up your sleeve. Go hungry, sure – but it’s a thirst for truly great wine that’ll be sated.
