REVIEW: Wahaca, Kentish Town

REVIEW: Wahaca, Kentish Town

Housed in the iconic old home of the Fifth Column T-shirt factory, Wahaca is the latest addition to the maelstrom of awesome eateries tucked away in Kentish Town.

Always in support of local businesses, we’ll admit to feeling dubious about its arrival. Planned to sit directly above Kentish Town tube station and fruit and veg stand The Fruit Bowl (frequented by most of the tight-knit community), TFL demanded the historic stall be evicted to make room for the venture. Boo.

But good ol’ Wahaca, headed up by Masterchef winner Tomasina Miers and Mark Selby, came to the rescue. Promising not to move in if it meant the end of The Fruit Bowl, plans were changed to accommodate old and new foodie favourites.

All this meant we finally got to visit the new establishment in September – with a conscience clear as a bell. And the thoughtfulness of the chain’s owners is clear. Downstairs is a fast-service Taco Bar, perfect for lunchbreak treats.

There are a couple of seats and benches scattered about for a quick catch up with colleagues, and as you walk out, you pass bowls of toothpicks and even a sink to wash your hands in (if you’re not getting messy eating a burrito, you ain’t doin’ it right).

Upstairs is a cavernous space in the typical Wahaca colourways. The street-style menu of medium-sized plates can be a little overwhelming, and the best option is often a few to share. In the past we’ve loved chipotle chicken quesedillas (£4.25) and chicken tinga tacos (£4.25), but tonight was a night for steak tacos.

If you don’t like sharing, we recommend a HUGE Sonora salad, served up in an awesome crispy (edible – yeah, it’s edible) bowl. A virtuous mix of avocado, pumpkin seeds, beans, British quinoa & Cos lettuce comes with your choice of chicken, steak or MSC crab and avocado – heaven.

Drinks are great, too – ambient Añejo tequila makes a great dessert alternative, to be savoured like whisky, and Mezcal is a must if you haven’t tried it. Only authentic if it contains at least 51% blue agave nectar, it’s delicious (Wahaca, being the discerning establishment that it is, serves only 100%).

Oh, and one more thing – it’s reasonably priced. Ideal for a group outing, the most expensive dish (for one person) is just £10.25 – and that’s a bloody nice steak. What we’re saying is there’s no excuse not to try it after payday. We’ll see you on the first of the month.
