REVIEW: The Bull & Gate, Kentish Town

REVIEW: The Bull & Gate, Kentish Town

Once upon a time, The Bull & Gate hosted some of the biggest names in music alongside great banter and good booze.

Soon the regular rumpus taking place at the venue took its toll, and the space demanded a revamp – one Young’s delivered in spades, reopening the legendary spot as a light and airy gastro pub in April this year – with a raucous cocktail bar upstairs. We were delighted to head over after work and give it a try – blindsided by a setting so pleasant, we decided it was one of the poshest pubs we’ve visited.

Seated under the high ceiling of the pretty dining room in the back, we could have forgotten we were in a pub at all – and when the starters arrived, we did. Two portions of smoked octopus was deftly presented and beautifully cooked, offset with a green swirl of courgette & basil purée plus pomelo, pomegranate and almond butter (£9).

Next came a Black Angus sirloin with roasted shallots, triple cooked chips, watercress and béarnaise sauce – the chips a particular highlight (and happily served in the bar too!).

Despite the hot weather we were tempted by the smoked lamb shoulder & burnt leek shepherd’s pie with purple sprouting broccoli – so tasty we didn’t mind overheating as we savoured every last bite.

A side of heritage tomato salad and shallots helped create the illusion of healthy choices while we eyed up the dessert menu – ending with a shared slice of incredibly rich chocolate torte.

We’d highly recommend popping to The Bull & Gate for a pint that turns into a full-blown meal – and a dance upstairs if you’re lucky.

Keep an eye on their Twitter account for awesome events taking place upstairs. With previous guests like Coldplay, Blur and Noah & The Whale, you never know who might drop by…
