REVIEW: Wahaca Breakfast Menu, Great Portland Street
Planning a brunch in London, cheap and perennially cheerful Mexican chain Wahaca probably wouldn’t spring to mind. Championing authentic Mexican street food (think tacos, burritos and tostadas for under a fiver a plate, smothered in expertly-made guacamole), the restaurant is beginning to branch out, launching a brunch menu at its Great Portland Street hub.
So what do Mexicans eat for breakfast, anyway? Avocado and plenty of it – smashed on toast with lime juice, blended into the powerful Green Smoothie, topping light and fluffy sweetcorn fritters – if you love the creamy fruit, you’ll be more than fine here. The long and varied menu is extremely well priced, well suited to carnivores and veggies alike – zingy, light dishes tempt just as much as heavier, meaty offerings, making a decision all the harder.
Mexican baked eggs with refried beans and chargrilled British chorizo mopped up with buttery sourdough (just £6), or eggy French toast with maple agave and streaky bacon at £7.50? A wholesome breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, frijoles, salsa and spinach (£5.50), or simple banana bread (£1.50) and granola (£3)? Having sampled a good spread of the above, we can confirm it doesn’t matter – everything is good, colourful ingredients making up filling and (mostly) healthy dishes in good portion sizes.
The perfect pre-shopping pit stop, anything on this cleverly put together menu will get you through a couple of manic hours in Primark (especially a sugary Mexican hot chocolate – one of their specialties, it must be tried). When you’re done, we advise you head straight back to Great Portland Street for tacos and cocktails (trust us, you’re going to need a few).
