INTERVIEW: Nicole Scherzinger On Her X Factor Style

INTERVIEW: Nicole Scherzinger On Her X Factor Style

Nicole Scherzinger may have recently split from Lewis Hamilton, Formula One racing driver, but her life is still very much in the fast lane. Nicole is a singer, model and style icon in her own right, a woman who takes the idea of looking good in party dresses as seriously as she does sounding good in the studio. With the tenth X Factor series kicking off this weekend, it was time FashionBite caught up with the Hawaii-born beauty…

Guest reporter: Emily Cleary

“I think it’s the whole package,” she begins, as we sit down for a rare and time-limited chat. “I’ve always said that for someone to succeed in the music industry these days they need to be the complete proposition. I know people say it should be about the voice and nothing else, but this is the entertainment industry, and appeal is in the way artists look and act, as well as how they sound.

“I think for a while people thought that it was fashionable to not be in fashion, but we’re past that now.”

A global star, who shot to fame with Pussycat Dolls, Nicole approaches X Factor commitments with the type of humour and ‘smile appeal’ that’s sadly missing from some of her peers. She’s open, approachable, honest and down-to-earth. Why? Because it’s the only way she can survive…

“X Factor is a long process and it can be tiring. I think you need to be able to enjoy it, and to make people laugh, otherwise the whole thing becomes too serious,” she reveals. “As long as we’re laughing with the people auditioning and not at them, it’s a great show.

“And it fascinates me how the next generation of performer looks – this is real fashion, coming up from the streets, and it’s often accompanied with real talent on the microphone. That’s what makes it so exciting.”

Juggling a busy year which, outside of X Factor commitments, includes the release of her second solo album, how does Nicole relax?

“Well like any girl I make sure I take time out for some shopping,” she smiles. “Fashion moves quickly and I love finding new items. My television commitments mean I have plenty of opportunities to show stuff off, so there is that advantage to being so busy, I guess.”

Of course, Nicole has the perfect base for a variety of styles – a fantastic physique, seductive cheekbone structure and a gorgeous complexion that reflects her Filipino/Hawaiian/Russian heritage.

But she admits, “I feel I always have to work hard with how I look.

“I think every single person has parts of their body they like and parts they don’t like, and I am no different. I’ve always been more likely to cover up my legs, but that won’t restrict the kinds of outfits I wear – from loose black dresses to tighter leather wear.

“I don’t think I have a signature outfit – I don’t think anyone should… even Simon Cowell experiments!” she laughs. “Fashion, for me, is about being brave. Sure, we make some mistakes, but you have to look back on those and smile. It’s got to be about having fun.”

And having fun is certainly at the heart of Nicole’s new album which, after delays, is now scheduled for a November release. The 34-year-old has revealed an uplifting sound, very reflective with the period she is at in her life at the moment.

“I just want to continue working hard. I know how lucky I am, I have some fantastic people around me, and as far as X Factor goes, if I can help others start their dreams while I’m further mine, then that’s great.”
