A Room with a View at Skylounge, London
Amy and Will check out the London skyline from a new angle, mojito in hand…
To the collective gasp of all London newcomers: it’s a sorry truth that there is no shortage of bars in the city where you will find yourself begrudgingly spending in excess of a tenner on a single cocktail. But equally true is that not all of them throw in an incredible view across this fair city at no extra charge. Introducing: Skylounge. This rooftop bar sits on the 12th floor of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, neighbouring Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and new kid on the block: The Shard. Ever a FashionBite favourite, we went along to sample the cocktails on offer, whilst soaking up the sights and doing plenty of ‘Ooh, look! There’s _______!’
Following an initial struggle with the lift (it appeared to have a mind of its own, adamant that we tour the lift shaft at least twice before we were released at the top), we arrived at Skylounge and, along with the rest of the after-work cocktail crowd, were immediately greeted with stunning views over Tower Bridge. Predictably, our drab British weather ruined the vision I’d had that we would be sipping cocktails out on the terrace, sunglasses on, trousers rolled up. Nevertheless, you can still fully appreciate this vantage point from the comfort of the warm bar area. And that we did.
We kicked things off which a Lynchburg Lemonade (Jack Daniels, Cointreau and lemonade, £12.50) and fan favourite, your classic Mojito (£10.50). You can rest assured that should you decide to journey up to the 12th floor of this Pepys Street hotel, you will be able to reward yourself with a delicious cocktail and relax. With a menu that caters to every mood, from classic shorts, longs and martinis to more quirky fizzes; cocktail connoisseurs would find it difficult to fault. Later came the Raspberry and Passion Punch and, my personal favourite, the Spiced Apple Martini (both £12.50).
The food menu at Skylounge goes hand in hand with their selection of refreshing cocktails, and is well suited to the type of al fresco summer dining we were unable to enjoy on this overcast Wednesday evening. That said, it tasted just as good indoors. Spiced Lamb Kebabs (£15.25) and a Classic Greek Salad (£10.50) were our dishes of choice, but not a decision made lightly. There’s plenty to choose from with a selection of salads, wraps, burgers, flatbreads, cheeses and more; if you’re looking for something tasty to soak up that Mojito then you’re in luck.
In short, Skylounge is a great bar with delicious drinks, lovely food and incredible views. With a huge roof terrace, we can’t wait to come back and see just how nice this bar will be in the summer. Time your visit well and you can have yourself a delightful after-work meal set against the backdrop of some of the best sights of London.
