Is This The Future For Publishing?

conde nast college opens its doors, FashionBite

The Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design welcomed its first students today (from over 23 countries) on the first ever ten-week Vogue Fashion Certificate course.  The new ten-week course is designed to offer an intensive grounding in the workings of the fashion industry.  It’s also the first College operated by publishing giant Condé Nast worldwide (which is based in London’s Soho) and marks a landmark new era for publishing.

“Condé Nast is well placed to enter the field of education, with the considerable authority and expertise vested in the Vogue brand. We are delighted to welcome our first students to our international College, and to assist in creating the next generation of talent in the fashion industry.” Nicholas Coleridge, President of Condé Nast International and Managing Director of Condé Nast Britain

IS THIS THE FUTURE FOR PUBLISHING?

The move from publishing to education is an incredibly clever one by global powerhouse Condé Nast. As magazine subscriptions decline and the struggle between print and online continues to play out, publishers have had to adapt or die v.quickly. Vogue has been at the forefront of this, with its retail ventures such as Vogue Fashion Night Out, its consumer fashion conference Vogue Fashion festival, and now an entirely new revenue stream through education (with fashion journalists trained up, ready to go and the Vogue mantra tripping off their tongues).

Fashion journalism is notoriously elitist and hard to get to into, with many rising to the top through their family connections more so than their journalistic skills, so will this college help to break that cycle? I really hope so. It’s a brilliant move for Vogue that’s for sure, but will there be enough jobs on the other side for all these fashion thirsty students? We’ll have to wait and see. But one thing’s for sure, it has raised the bar for publishing to a whole new level and it will be interesting to see who else follows suit…
