AW12 BEAUTY: Gorgeous Earthy Tones!
Things we don’t like about autumn: Long nights, cold(er) weather and no more bank holidays until Christmas. Things we do like about autumn: Autumn/Winter fashion, conkers (always have, always will) and all those pretty autumnal colours. Oh and speaking of pretty autumnal colours, they featured quite heavily in this year’s Autumn/Winter beauty looks. So to get you in the mood, here are some of our favourite autumn hues for the face.
Hooray, the number 1 ‘suits all’ shade is back! Whether you’re a redhead, brunette or blonde there is a shade of brown to suit and flatter all. Louis Vuitton gave the classic shade an A/W 2012 update with a smudgy ‘I haven’t been to bed yet’ look. Recreate it by leaving eyelids bare, except for a little mascara and sweeping brown eye-shadow under the lower lids. Make sure the brush is loaded with eye-shadow for this dusty look, a great way to incorporate next season’s gothic trend into your look.
Autumn isn’t autumn without a dose of warming orange. The beauty world’s summer fascination with the tangerines and corals colour looks set to continue into next season with orange adorning eyes, cheeks and lips. For a soft autumnal glow, apply a peachy blush like Mac’s Modern Mandarin Powder Blush to cheeks and brow bones a la Rodarte.
If subtlety isn’t your thing but you don’t want to venture into The Only Way is Essex territory, opt for a strong shade of orange but limit application to the eyes only as illustrated by Narcisso Rodriguez.
We’ve been toying with the idea of red eyeshadow ever since we heard that Karl Lagerfeld insisted on including one in his collection for Shu Uemura, but weren’t entirely sure how to make it work. We love the way Donna Karen used red eyes to inject a flash of colour into an all-black look.
For a more classic approach to red look to the likes of Zac Posen and Rick Owens who all went for bold red lips in their autumn/winter shows. Use bold red lips to add femininity to an androgynous look like Mark Jacobs.
