David Bailey’s East End Exhibition

David Bailey’s East End Exhibition

Lifestyle Reporter: Amy Everett

David Bailey’s East End exhibits never-before-seen pictures spanning 50 years of life in the East End, focusing on the Sixties, Eighties and recent years. Some famous faces feature in this innovative new exhibition, alongside shots of the area’s most infamous residents, illustrating the eclectic nature of the area’s inhabitants.

The 1960’s section features images shot for a Sunday Times Magazine article on the Krays that could never be published, as they went to trial as the article was due for print. The gambling club featured was firebombed minutes after Bailey left the building.

See Spitalfields, Brick Lane, Stratford and Newham as you never have before, with old shop fronts and children playing in bombed out buildings long since cleared to make way for tower blocks.

Bailey’s photographs have come to provide a visual record of the diverse groups of immigrants who have settled in this part of the city. The pictures masterfully capture the ever-changing topography of East London life.

Supported by Newham borough, the exhibition is part of the CREATE summer programme and runs from 6 July – 5 August at Compressor House, Royal Docks.
