Meadham Kirchhoff – Never cease to amaze!

Meadham Kirchhoff – Never cease to amaze!

Meadham Kirchhoff - Never cease to amaze, FashionBiteWhat do you get if you mix a candy floss diffused wig, a five year olds prima ballerina tiara, bubblegum pink stockings, Cinderella’s satin gown with shocking turquoise, Grayson Perry make-up and all to the sound of The Spice Girls? A bonkers Diamond Jubilee Meadham Kirchhoff for Topshop spectacular of course!

Set to the backdrop of moving escalators, glittering crowns and funfair balloons, FashionBite saw Topshop’s flagship store on Oxford Street come alive at 5pm last Friday, with fairytale fever!

Caricatures of the London-based duo’s designs came dancing enthusiastically down the improvised catwalk, to the soundtrack of The Sex Pistols ‘God Save The Queen.’ It may not have been everyone’s first choice as the anthem to celebrate the Queen’s reign (though it has been rumoured that Buckingham Palace had asked the aging punk band to close the Jubilee concert on Monday night…. who would have thought it!) But this was a Meadham Kirchhoff extravaganza and anyone who saw their S/S12 show, knows all about their showstopper performances.

Dancing like they were back in their junior school disco days to ‘Wannabe’ , the professional dancers donned sickly sweet, pastel princess dresses, elbow length satin gloves, corsages and bobbing tiaras (a nod to her Majesty) all with a London cool swag and 90’s Britpop, ‘Ladette’ attitude.

Even with a few hiccups, including one dress getting caught in the moving stairway, nothing could hinder the enthusiasm in their performance. When the curtain fell and the window display was released to the operatic sounds of ‘Rule Britannia’, the crowds really did go crazy – from in store to the streams of fans that had flooded the pavement outside.

Looking like a magical music jewellery box, the statutes came alive pirouetting, pointing and twirling, the sequin decorated corsets of the dancers shone with vibrancy and heightened elegance, compared to the troupe before. Multi-coloured feathers, fluffy garter belts and hair that would rival Marge Simpson’s ensued before the pinnacle finale of a glittering Union Jack shield was finally revealed. It was a fabulous, frivolous, tongue-in-cheek celebration of all things British.

Get down to Topshop now to purchase the latest Meadham Kirchhoff collaboration for Topshop; candyfloss pink and extremely-minty green are still the forerunners in the collection, with wigs, glitter, sequins and the FashionBite favourite, the silver tinsel dress…  “All Hail Her Majesty(s)!”
