Matthew Bourne’s The Nutcracker at Sadler’s Wells, London
Last week, FashionBite attended Matthew Bourne’s production of ‘The Nutcracker’ at Sadler’s Wells theatre in London and it was an absolutely fantastic performance.
Last time I saw The Nutcracker, it was a very traditional performance in Oxford and I was about nine years old; studying ballet at the time. I’d almost forgotten the story, but in fact it didn’t matter because Matthew Bourne’s interpretation was a far cry from the original script…and superb for it. It was bold, camp and extremely funny in parts. It was also very accessible for someone who’s never seen a ballet before. If you’re looking to take your boyfriend/husband…this is a great one to choose! The music is also instantly recognisable and very beautiful.
There is a particular dance in the first half (I don’t want to spoil it for you!) which takes place between a male and female character and is absolutely stunning – one of the most romantic and beautifully danced pieces I’ve seen. In the second half, we are treated to some hilarious group dances with elaborate stage sets and extravagant costumes; interjected with more serious performances.
I would highly recommend this ballet, particularly if it’s your first time. It’s such a fabulous way to spend an evening.
