LFW SS12: Jayne Pierson’s ballet dancer catwalk models

LFW SS12: Jayne Pierson’s ballet dancer catwalk models

Jayne Pierson, FashionBiteI’ve seen Jayne Pierson show for the last few seasons at On|Off during London Fashion Week, so was keen not to miss her this season.

New for SS12, Jayne partnered with long term friend and designer Derek Lawlor on a debut collaboration called ‘Pierson Lawlor’.

Jayne is known for her powerful, structured silhouettes which empower the female form, using materials such as leather and silk. Knitwear specialist Derek has a fascination with the physical properties of materials he uses, which are intrinsic to his designs.

Their collection, entitled ‘The Mobius Strip’ featured jackets, skirts and dresses in a palette of washed pastels with taupe and stone silks; striking leather in metallic orange, champagne and sandy suede; and embellishment detailing such as fringing and tassles. But what was absolutely brilliant about the show was the design duo’s collaboration with The Royal Ballet.

Rather than using traditional models, they used eight female and two male ballet dancers who pirouetted, leaped and twisted down the catwalk.

The show felt very fresh and directional as a result and was a fantastic way to merge the different elements of fashion and art. I felt like I was watching a captivating ballet and the movements of the dancer’s helped capture the playfulness of the collection.

Will we see dancers and other artists used instead of more traditional models in future at LFW…I hope so!
