Carb Heaven at Buns & Buns, Covent Garden

Ever looked forward to the artisan bread basket more than the meal to follow? Living for weekends begun with freshly baked sourdough? Head straight to Buns & Buns, and don’t look back.

Prepare to drool over breads and buns gathered from around the world: pillow-soft bad buns, brioche lobster rolls and pão de queijo, a Brazilian cheese bread made for soaking up rotisserie chicken juices.

The perfect place to card-load before a big run or during marathon training (or during a killer hangover), it’s an excellent stop-off point in buzzy Covent Garden. A large, airy glass box right in the middle of the Piazza, you can people watch as you sip great cocktails and watch chefs breeze around the pristine open kitchen.

We indulged in sumac-dusted corn fritters to start (tasty, but mega filling – good for sharing between three or four), and pork bao. Hints from the waitress tempted us to double the portion, asking for the ‘secret bun’, which turned out out to be a cheesy beef patty bao.

A day’s walking through central London meant we were still hungry, with room for a Chilean rib eye sandwich and huge pile of mussels and clams drenched in a chilli & garlic-infused white wine sauce (served with guess what, more bread, for lapping up every last drop). Elsewhere on the menu you’ll find half a grilled native lobster drenched in Ponzu beurre blanc with caramelised lemon and fries, and a hearty chicken soup made with wild mushrooms, sweetcorn, spring onions and saffron.

What initially seems a handy place to rest your feet amongst the hustle and bustle, quickly becomes much more. The modern and super clean interiors are a pleasure to sit in, staff are friendly and crucially, their knowledge of the cocktail menu is expert-level. We recommend a Chai Spice Mule (Stolichnaya Caramel Vodka, ginger shot, chai tea syrup) on a chilly day, or a Spicy Margarita to clear away any cobwebs (somehow) still hanging around…
