An Evening At Australian/South American Cafe Abuelo

abuelo london

WHAT? Meaning ‘grandfather’ in Spanish, Abuelo cafe cum restaurant offers a comforting, relaxed vibe, aiming to recreate that feeling of being at home with your family.

For its prime location just along from the Hippodrome and Covent Garden, it’s a supremely laid-back space, definitely reminiscent of the Australian coffee houses it was inspired by. Coming complete with a ‘kitchen table’ shared by anyone who walks through the doors. there’s definitely a warm, inclusive feel to this place.

From the handwoven Argentinian rug running under the large dining table to the antique spindle chairs and timber fireplace, you’ll adore the decor – and the food’s worth sticking around for after you’ve finished your (excellent) flat white. We sampled a selection of plates from the all-day menu, mixing up salads, sandwiches and a rather beautiful mac ‘n’ cheese-stuffed pumpkin. Roasted vegetables were served with goats curd, honey and spicy, topped with fire-roasted nuts, crumbled goats cheese and sumac dressing. The ‘Vegan Bibi’ brought together rice, lemon hummus, chilli & red pepper salsa, pickled cabbage, rocket cress, spiralized veg and a cashew ‘cheese’ sprinkle.

Lamb tostadas were small for their £9 price point, but packed with flavour – and the BBQ Croque-Monsieur more than made up for this – organic slow cooked pulled pork is piled high with caramelised balsamic onions, Béchamel and mature cheddar on towering sourdough with a side of salad. Our wine was excellent, too – a bottle of Pablo y Walter Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina going down far too quickly. We’d highly recommend Abuelo for a relaxed brunch or lunch date – a godsend to anyone who needs a time out from pre-Christmas crowds.
