Autumn Leaves Menu At Sake No Hana

WHAT? All smooth edges and long, sleek lines, Sake No Hana is the embodiment of ultra-modern, polished Japanese cuisine. In the heart of Mayfair, just a couple of minutes’ walk from The Ritz, you’ll spot it from 30 paces – huge windows adorned with autumn leaves, burning bright orange and red against gunmetal grey and the comparatively drab facades of neighbouring buildings. Inside, interiors are designed by esteemed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, lined with bamboo and cypress wood for a futuristic forest feel.

All these leaves point to momiji-gari, the act of viewing arrestingly beautiful Japanese maple trees in autumn. Now, the food. Executive Chef Hideki Hiwatashi is paying homage to the ancient custom with a bespoke Autumn Leaves menu and it’s at a surprisingly low price point.

THE MENU: Coming in at £40 per person, it can be enjoyed with a specially-created cocktail flight featuring Belvedere vodka (£23 to share between two). Here it is in full:

WHY GO? To sample pure indulgence at a fraction of the usual price. For £40, this is a well-rounded and filling selection of superior quality sushi and meats, in one of the most prestigious settings in London. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we sampled, stand-out dishes being the fried truffle rice (just enough truffle, not too overpowering) and the pan-fried Loch salmon, seared to perfection. Dessert was exceptional, chocolate lovers more than satisfied with the indulgent hazelnut feuilletine and its gorgeous autumn leaf presentation. We’d recommend this experience to anyone looking for a slice of high end glamour without the triple figure bill – though it’s hard to resist ordering pricey, beautiful cocktails once you’re through the door.
