REVIEW: Cantina Laredo, Covent Garden

cantina laredo

WHAT? An upscale, family-owned Covent Garden restaurant capturing the modern Mexican dining experience with an informal sharing menu and plenty of tequila-based cocktails. Think minimal decor and marble counter tops – not a tequila worm nor sombrero in sight.

The country’s diverse regional cuisines are explored through the likes of ceviche, tacos and frijoles, with an emphasis on super fresh guacamole – which is expertly made at your table.

There are eight variations, of which we tried the spiciest – roasted yellow habaneros are mixed with coriander, roasted shallots and garlic, served with yellow habanero salsa and warm corn tortilla chips. Delicious, but not for the faint hearted, a few scoops took several cocktails to forget.

Dishes are authentic, but not traditional – think new twists on old classics like aubergine tostadas with green habanero mayonnaise, sweet potato and beetroot skewers and duck tacos with Nutella mole and plums.

Stand-out small dishes include Tacos Dorado (crispy chicken tacos with chile de árbol cream) and sashimi yellowtail with lime aqua chile, a jicama, cucumber and radish.

Larger dishes are designed to be shared or eaten individually. We loved Guajillo glazed baby back pork ribs with scallions and fried leeks, and jumbo prawns with guajillo achiote butter.

WHERE? A few minutes walk from Covent Garden tube station, it’s in the heart of central London – perfect for grabbing a bite before a theatre show or resting weary feet after a long days’ sightseeing.

WHY GO? Perfect for a Friday night dinner, the place has a real buzz, always full of people – just watch the prices; with some larger dishes beginning upwards of £20, they can start to rack up fast.

ANYTHING ELSE? Spice lovers must try the ‘I’m Kinda Hot’ cocktail, a punchy mix of green habanero-infused 1800 Sliver, Cointreau, guava and lime.
