REVIEW: Cafe Chula, Camden

Cafe Chula camden

WHAT? Properly authentic Mexican street food and cocktail pitchers served up in the belly of Camden market.

Cafe Chula Camden

WHERE? One of the few bricks and mortar restaurants in Camden market, Cafe Chula stands on the doorstep of Kerb myriad eateries.

WHY GO? Apart from the probability of rain (this is England, after all) there are plenty of reasons to book a table here instead of grabbing a Kati roll or mac ’n’ cheese box at one of the neighbouring stalls, for a fraction of the price. First up, Cafe Chula serves booze – and plenty of it. We loved the tequila and mescal-based cocktails (margaritas are a must), but the beer list of particular note, taking in plenty of names commonly found in Mexican households (think everything from Pacifico to craft ales from Pierced and Ocho Reales). Wine varietals come from across the globe, picked by trendy supplier East Street.

ANYTHING ELSE? The food, obv. Each dish draws on a different area of Mexico, taking in all the old favourites from tacos to quesadillas via enchiladas and spiced rice. We started off with tortilla chips slathered in guacamole and pico de gallo, then moved on to El Diablo tacos (prawns cooked in a spicy cherry tomato sauce with more guacamole) and the Chicken Enchiladas (three free-range chicken-stuffed corn tortillas with creamy tomatillo salsa, cheese and pickled red onion).

Elsewhere on the menu you’ll find lunch options of spicy salads and hues rancheros, and be sure to drop by for ‘Taco Tuesdays’ – where all tacos are £2.50, all day.
