REVIEW: Bo Drake, Soho

bo drake

WHAT? Slow-cooked meats borrowing from American and European traditions, enlivened with East Asian flavours – and a banging cocktail menu to boot.

WHERE? Look out for jazzy artwork pointing to this stylish spot on Greek Street, bang in the middle of buzzy Soho.

WHY GO? To sample what else but “KFC”, Korea’s far superior answer to the Colonel. These are gloriously sticky Korean fried chicken wings in soy garlic, grape and rosemary, which for just £9 can fill a hungry belly. If like us, you’re greedy to try more, we’d recommend sampling dishes from across the entire menu. Be sure to order the Tuna Kimbab – a rice and seaweed roll with tuna, basil and mascarpone, avocado and sticky soy, which is incredibly filling yet light.

Next, a soy ginger salmon fillet (which comes with red pepper miso sauce, spinach & edamame salad) and a delectable kimchi pancake alongside edamame, Gochujang and mozzarella. Sides include sweet potato fries, spicy rice cake and house kimchi and pickles, but save room for the meats – miso-glazed baby back ribs with smoked apple wood and Asian BBQ sauce looked particularly good, as it sailed past our heads to the next table.

Veggie options include burrata & beetroots (served with pesto, tapioca crisp and miso honey) and traditional Japchae (sweet potato noodles with seasonal veg).

ANYTHING ELSE? A BBQ brunch sharing tray will set you back just £35 per person, with bottomless prosecco and an array of lip-smacking meat dishes that demand you roll up your sleeves. Oh, and the drinks are excellent, too – must-try signature cocktails include a ‘Pineapple Daiquiri’ and a ‘Cashew Old Fashion’ (the latter taking in an interesting mix of cashew-infused Bourbon and Peycau bitters).
