REVIEW: Good Hotel, Royal Victoria Dock

Good hotel london

WHAT? A floating boutique hotel replete with Dutch industrial design, perched on the waterfront at Royal Victoria dock.

Shipped over by submersible barge over the North Sea from Amsterdam after a year-long pop up in 2015, Good Hotel is a unique social business concept, combining a premium hotel experience with an opportunity to do good in the local community.

A profit for non-profit business (meaning all profits are re-invested), the aim of Good Hotel’s game is to provide a gorgeous, multi-functional space where customers can work, play and stay. At the same time, long-term unemployed locals are given custom-made hospitality training and the chance to build a new future.

WHERE? A short walk from Royal Victoria station on the DLR, metres from the Emirates Air Line. You can take the cable car from Royal Victoria dock to the 02, where there’s a bowling alley, cinema, pubs, restaurants, sculpture and art installations.

The hotel itself offers a living room cum library space packed with inspiring books, trendy neon signage (the message reads: ‘Create Beauty, Do Good’) and cosy furniture to curl up in. Take the elevator up to the rooftop terrace and you’ll enjoy an undisturbed view of London Docklands, where intrepid wake boarders and swimmers brave the cold waters while punters observe with bar snacks, G&Ts and chill out music.

Downstairs, an array of well-priced small plates are served through to 9pm (think chicken bites, salads, avo on toast and burgers), and there’s a bar serving up cocktails and coffee.

HOW MUCH? The entry-level room category is ‘Standard’, measuring a cosy 13sqm. Though compact, it offers a double or twin bed, en-suite bathroom with stand-up shower and a small working desk with free WiFi from £58 per night.

From there, rooms get larger, the Corner Waterview Room measuring 30sqm to pack in a large bathroom (with a powerful rainfall shower and his ‘n’ hers sinks), futon sofa, DAB radio, work desk and a brilliantly soft XL King bed – not to mention fantastic waterfront views. This costs from £108 per night and can fit up to three people.

End your visit at the buffet breakfast, with towering bowls of hummus and guacamole, fresh pastries, fruit, yoghurt, fresh bread and eggs, then grab the morning papers and take your coffee upstairs to make the most of the views in a rooftop egg chair. A feel-good stay that does good, too – we can’t think of a nicer way to treat yourself.
