REVIEW: Honest burgers, Brixton Village

honest burgers brixton

WHAT? A tiny little joint in the bustle of Brixton village, serving British meat doused in indulgent sauces alongside perfectly crisp rosemary chips.

With branches spreading across London, you’re sure to have come across Honest Burgers – but what sets it apart from the likes of Byron and Tommi’s are perfect patties, every time. Cooked medium (to rare, for the purists), minced beef patties are delicious all on their own – but complemented by an array of incredible dips like chipotle mayo and Honest hot sauce (the bacon gravy is a must).

We like the ‘Honest’, served with onion relish, smoked bacon, cheddar, pickled cucumber and lettuce, but on this trip tried the ‘Disco Bistro’ (pictured). A whimsical partnership with he of  Chick ‘N’ Sours fame Carl Clarke, it brought together pineapple, pink onions, bacon jam and burger sauce. A winning combo that’s sadly now finished, but the Specials change regularly and we can’t wait to see what comes next.

WHY GO? For a good meal guaranteed, and a short menu that doesn’t require any faffing. If you don’t fancy beef, the chicken burger is excellent, too – and the coleslaw’s some of the best we’ve tried. Worth mentioning are the homemade soft drinks (regular and mint lemonade plus iced tea), a solid brunch menu and a kids menu to boot. What’s more, the Baker St and Tooting restaurants serve Halal chicken.

ANYTHING ELSE? Head over to a participating restaurant (Brixton, Cambridge, Clapham and Greenwich) at any time Monday to Thursday and order any burger (including specials, additional charge for doubles) and they’ll give you a cinema ticket at the restaurant’s local Picturehouse cinema. That’s £16 all in – dreamy.
