REVIEW: Marcella, Deptford

WHAT? The latest venture from the team behind gloriously unfussy neighbourhood Italian, Artusi.

Bringing a taste of the Adriatic coast to Deptford, Marcella continues the focus on well-sourced, simple ingredients served in sparse, trendy environs. Before this opening, a day perusing flea markets may have been the only thing to tempt us this far South – but ten minutes inside and we’ve already decided it’s time to cross the river more often.

Begin by looking up at the blackboard, bursting with daily specials and weekly experiments. From fried artichokes with aioli to buttery pasta ribbons dotted with girolles, there’s always something new and indulgent to come back for.

Tonight’s menu! Seating in the restaurant from 6pm.

Sourcing produce from select suppliers and London markets, it’s a joy to know that everything is served fresh.

Pasta dishes come in starter-size portions (still large) or regular, alongside large sharing plates (the likes of 80 day aged Hereford forerib) and dinner plates – we liked the sound of smoked Swaledale lamb, parsley root, turnips & spinach.

Thanks to effusive recommendations from the couple sat next to us, we chose a hearty squid ink bucatini with ease; a generous pile of black spaghetti-like pasta laden with capers and garlic.

This paired beautifully with a carafe of 2015 Baglio Rosso, followed by a cheeky dollop of blackcurrant leaf ripple ice cream – just out of season, we caught it just in time.

With the arrival of this gem of an eating spot, plus Gingerline’s latest venture ‘Juniper Manor‘ just down the road running until Christmas there’s plenty to bring you to Deptford these days.

REVIEW: Clutch, Hoxton

WHY GO? 'Guilt-free' and 'fried chicken' aren't words you'd normally put together, but Clutch's (free-range) poultry is fried in nut...
