REVIEW: The Bach, Hoxton

REVIEW: The Bach, Hoxton

WHAT? Dedicated to supporting small businesses, this Kiwi-run cafe cum workspace offers fresh, free-range and locally sourced produce where possible.

Pronounced ‘batch’, The Bach nods to the tiny beach homes common in New Zealand, evoking the humble tranquillity of a few hours spent by the water.

The decor’s on the industrial side of ‘pared back’ – grey, concrete walls, distressed tables and hard benches peppered with bursts of greenery. It’s infinitely Instagrammable, but the trend has us crying out for comfy cushions and squishy corners to snuggle up in. Thankfully, the food’s worth the numb backside.

WHERE?  There are two branches – Broadway Market and Hoxton, a few minutes’ walk from the heart of Shoreditch. We popped into the Hoxton Street branch for a sunny, light breakfast, cheered by friendly staff and the mix of healthy and indulgent dishes.

BEST DISH: Kimchi and fried eggs on toasted sourdough (£7.50) looked excellent as it sailed past our heads to another table, but we were just as pleased with the ‘Veggie Bach Pach’ (£9.80). Poached eggs, wilted spinach, organic baked beans, garlic mushrooms, courgette, halloumi, vine tomatoes and spiced sweet potato come with sourdough toast (but we added a side of avocado, natch).

Worth mentioning are Shakshuka and Brioche French toast options, as well as a thick steak sandwich and the sweetcorn fritter stack (£10.90) piled high with maple bacon. The deliciously sweet chilli jam is £1 and works with pretty much any savoury dish.

HOW MUCH? Watch out, as prices can start to ramp up. Some dishes are very fairly priced (Clarence Court spiced eggs on toast are just £5, porridge with banana and honey is £4.80) but order a couple of coffees, a side of avo and one of the larger options (don’t forget the discretionary 12.5% service charge) and you can stumble into the realm of £25 a head.

WHY GO? The coffee. It’s the best. The Bach use local, Kiwi-run Allpress, their focus being responsibly-sourced, great tasting caffeine. For that we’ll be Bach very soon indeed.
