REVIEW: Patty & Bun, Hackney

WHAT? “No nonsense, fresh, honest, damn tasty burgers… with some cracking side kicks” – their words, our thoughts entirely. With seven locations now scattered across the capital (eight if you count the stall at indoor golf centre Swingers LDN), the appetite for simple, high quality meat shows no sign of being curbed.

WHY GO? Because everything on the short, no-nonsense menu is good.

BEST DISH: Menus differ very slightly at each branch (head to Redchurch Street for the outstanding Roast Chicken Dinner Hash small plate) but always, there’s the classic Ari Gold; beef patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickled onions, ketchup and smokey P&B mayo on soft brioche.

 Veggies have a genuinely great option = a field mushroom fritter doused in garlic parsley butter and cheese sauce with coleslaw, lettuce and tarragon mayo on brioche.

Sides are as important as the main event, the likes of posh nuggets or ‘Thunder Thighs’ (confit chicken with smoked jalapeno butter, fresh chilli and lime) adding a little extra to the regular burger and chips scenario. Homemade sauces are so good you’ll find yourself ordering rosemary fries as a vehicle for chicken or kimchi mayo.

Here we saw no evidence of the peanut butter choc ices rumoured to end the meal at some branches – but having found those, what would be our excuse to try the next branch?
