Chanel’s Coco Noir Perfume “the dazzle of black & Venice”

Chanel has launched its brand new fragrance, Coco Noir, nationwide. Coco Noir is the third perfume to join the Coco family, which began with Coco in 1984 followed by Coco Mademoiselle in 2001.

Creating the fragrance, Chanel Perfumer Jacques Polge  was inspired by two of Coco Chanel’s greatest loves “the dazzle of black and Venice”. Polge says: “The night vision of the ‘Orient that starts and ends in Venice’ imposed itself upon me and that is where I wanted to go.”

Encased in a black, glass bottle Polge’s “night vision” stands out among the brand’s other perfumes, a deliberate move according to Chanel Perfumer Christopher Sheldrake who told WWD “Noir sits in its own space. We are careful not to launch a lot of fragrances — we choose to create scents that represent an era, not a passing fancy”.

Chanel’s sparing approach to perfume has so far been successful, just look at Chanel No 5. The brand’s iconic fragrance was created in the 1920’s, at the request of Coco Chanel who wanted a scent that was less feminine than traditional perfumes of the time and would embody the boyish flapper of the era. Now a classic, still loved by women across the world, Chanel No. 5 has proved itself anything but a passing fancy.

With its dark, heavy bottle and exotic notes of Calabrian Bergamot, heart of rose absolute, jasmine absolute and sandalwood, Coco Noir looks set to be the perfect fragrance to embody the coming season’s gothic fixation. But what, then is Chanel predicting for the coming era? I suppose that’s up to us to decide…
