I’m a big fan of essential oils, but particularly when it comes to bathing…and no one quite does it like Aromatherapy Associates. I set aside an evening this week totally to myself (after all this festive partying and drinking I felt like I needed it!), and gave myself a complete aromatherapy overhaul.
First off, I lit candles all around the bathroom and put some classical music on. Then I ran a deep bath pouring in the ‘De-Stress Mind’ bottle from the Minature Bath & Shower collection. You can buy this from Aromatherapy Associates, Space NK and Liberty and it’s absolutely gorgeous. The range is a great introduction to the brand as well and features 9 oils; ranging from Deep Relax, to De-Stress Muscle and Revive Morning.
As the bath was pouring, I made myself a cup of detoxifying nettle and peppermint tea and then I relaxed in the bath reading Vogue for a good half an hour or so. I used the gorgeous Kukui Oil Body Wash from new british beauty brand Connock London to wash with. Founded by Amanda Connock, the brand is based on sourcing ingredients from exotic, natural ingredients which have been used in their native countries for centuries. The Kukui Oil is sourced from Hawaii, is enriched with aloe vera and papaya extract and smells wonderful.
After the bath, I massaged Aromatherapy Associate’s Intensive Skin Treatment Oil into my face. It has a stunning scent of lavender and rose, so I dabbed it on to my fingertips first and then breathed in the smell for about a minute or so before working it into my face. After applying the oil, I left it to soak in for a few minutes, and then applyed the Overnight Repair Mask – which features rose and frankincense – and nourishes, tightens and smoothes the skin whilst you sleep.
Aromatherapy Associates believes very much in rituals as a brand and it says: “We believe that the ritual of an aromatherapy treatment, whether at home or in a spa, is as important as the effects of the essential oils themselves. Our treatments aim to soothe and calm the mind, bring the emotions into balance and ease strains, tension and blockages in the body and skin.”
It’s important to have these rituals and a brilliant way of relaxing the mind and body, particularly if you have trouble sleeping. At an event for the spa brand Ila recently, I chatted to founder Denise about the notion of rituals and how essential they are to relaxation. She gave me some of her top tips…
Denise said bath time should feel like a ritual in winter with soothing music, candles and incense. Before heading up for the bath, she suggested making a fresh herbal tea to take with you. Peel and grill some fresh ginger (for about 10 minutes or until soft), mush down and mix it with fresh lime and honey to create the perfect, soothing drink.
After the bath and to help rid the body of any ‘bad heat’ or toxins, Denise suggested placing a chilled cotton eye mask (just an ordinary one – so it’s worth putting in the fridge before you go up for the bath) over your eyes and a hotwater bottle on your feet. The sensation of the heat and cold is meant to have a serene and calming effect.
