FB.What inspired you to launch the Miller Harris brand?
“I always wanted to be an independent perfumer and everything evolved very organically. I am led by my instincts and have learn to be patient over the years in order to realise my dreams. I was inspired from such a young age…
There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t think of my grandmother and grandfather and how they lived. They were self sufficient, making their own clothes, bread, jams, teas, growing all their vegetables. My grandmother had an amazing walled garden full of flowers like sweet pea, geranium and stocks. And my grandfather was a carpenter and he made all their furniture. As a child, I would spend summer holidays with my sister at their home in Scotland.
FB. What is the ethos behind the brand?
Miller Harris was founded as a fragrance house with a difference – a perfumery created by a perfumer. The scents I produce offer something unique, something extraordinary that has a story behind it and is created through instinct with the best natural ingredients. When visiting one of our boutiques I hope that people will view perfume as more than a mere commodity; I want my customers to experience a feeling of nostalgia but also for them to feel like they are experiencing something very special and unique.
FB.How involved are you in the design/production process?
I get involved in everything! I work on everything from the fragrances to the packaging to the displays in the stores!
FB.What inspires you on a daily basis?
Everything! Even stepping out of my front door, I can get ideas for new creations. My family is also deeply inspiring.
FB. Which other designers do you admire/why?
Make-up – Sisley skincare is amazing, I completely swear by it. Nars eyepencil and blusher. Lipbalm from Fresh. I also love Vaishaly skincare as well as Elemental Herbology.
Fashion – Celine, APC, Martin Margiela
FB. Can you describe your personal style?
My ‘uniform’ is jeans and a stripey Breton top from Amor Lux. Boots and sandals by Martin Margiela. I also love APC and Celine. I mostly wear navy blue, white, khaki, grey.
FB. How did you get into perfumery?
Since I was a very young child, I have always been fascinated by fragrance. During the school holidays, I worked in a perfume shop in my home town when fragrance was only for the elite. It was very luxurious, very grand and this impression has stayed with me ever since. I was instinctively driven to go to Paris where I studied to become a perfumer. It is something that has always been with me.
FB. What makes a good perfumer?
The use of quality natural ingredients forms the foundation stone to Miller Harris fragrances. In order to preserve the delicate scent of the ingredients I use I will always source the highest quality materials available. Without these I could not fulfill my work nor express my creativity. I don’t have any boundaries and limitations in my creativity. I do what I do because I believe in it. I don’t follow trends.
FB.You’ve moved into other categories including wallpaper, tea and olive oils – where do you see the Miller Harris brand in 5 years time?
Each day we evolve and new opportunities come our way. With a team that has grown from just three to now over twenty staff, we are actively growing but never lose sight of our values. The brand is now one of the most aspired to and original luxury fragrance brands in the market place.
The future no doubt holds new adventures, new opportunities. We will continue to expand with new openings…”
